Terms of Use
These terms are between you and Dogs in Boots LLC (“we”, “us”), the maker of Lamp. Lamp is licensed to you under Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the “Standard EULA”), at apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula. The terms below add to it; if they conflict, the Standard EULA wins. By using Lamp, you agree to both. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.
In short
- Reading the Bible in Lamp is free. Lamp Pro is an optional subscription that adds more.
- Lamp Pro renews automatically. To stop it, cancel in your Apple Account settings at least 24 hours before it renews.
- Study notes and answers are written by AI. They can be wrong, and they aren’t professional advice.
1. Lamp Pro
Lamp is free to download. The whole Bible, the daily verses, saved verses, share cards, widgets, reminders and your streak are free, along with a study note on the Verse of the Day and 3 more study notes a week. Lamp Pro is an optional subscription that adds:
- a study note on any verse;
- every related verse in a study note;
- Ask, questions about a passage (for adults);
- every theme for verse cards and widgets, and cards without the Lamp wordmark.
The subscription screen in Lamp shows what Lamp Pro includes and what it costs before you buy.
Plans and prices
- Lamp Pro Yearly: US$39.99 a year, starting with a 7-day free trial if you’re eligible.
- Lamp Pro Monthly: US$7.99 a month, without a free trial.
In Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the App Store shows the price in your currency before you buy. Taxes may apply.
Payment and automatic renewal
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm your purchase or, with a free trial, when the trial ends.
- Your subscription renews automatically for the same length of time, at the then-current price, unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Apple charges the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- If the price goes up, Apple tells you before it applies and, where required, asks you to agree.
Free trial
The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, as the App Store decides. If you don’t cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, Apple charges the yearly price and your subscription begins. Lamp reminds you before the trial ends: in the app, and with a notification two days before if you allow notifications.
Cancelling
- Cancel anytime in your iPhone’s Settings › your name › Subscriptions › Lamp, or in Lamp under Settings › Subscription › Manage subscription.
- To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before your trial ends or your subscription renews. After you cancel a paid subscription, Lamp Pro stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
- Deleting Lamp, or your Lamp account, doesn’t cancel your subscription.
Refunds
Apple handles all payments, so refunds are Apple’s decision. You can ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Restoring and Family Sharing
To use Lamp Pro on more than one iPhone, sign in to the same Lamp account on each (Settings › Create your account). If Pro isn’t showing, open Settings › Subscription › Restore purchases while signed in to the Apple Account you subscribed with. Restoring on an iPhone that isn’t signed in to that Lamp account moves Lamp Pro to it, away from your other iPhone. Lamp Pro isn’t shared through Family Sharing.
Fair use
Study notes and Ask questions come with Lamp Pro as fair use: currently up to 30 study notes and Ask questions together in any 24 hours. The limit is there to prevent abuse and keep Lamp affordable, and Lamp shows how many you have left in Settings › Subscription. If we lower it, we’ll tell you in Lamp before the change takes effect.
2. AI study notes and Ask
- Study notes (Explain) and Ask’s answers are written by AI, Anthropic’s Claude, and checked automatically before you see them. They can still be wrong, incomplete or unbalanced.
- Every Bible verse Lamp shows comes from the Bible text built into the app, never from the AI.
- Study notes and answers are study aids. They don’t replace reading the passage in its context, your church, or the care of a pastor or a trusted friend.
- They aren’t medical, legal, financial or mental health advice.
- Where Christians disagree, notes aim to set out the main views fairly, without taking a side.
- Lamp’s AI doesn’t speak for God, pray for you, or pretend to be a person.
- Lamp isn’t an emergency service. If you’re in danger or in crisis, call your local emergency number or a crisis line; our Support page lists them.
- If a note or an answer looks wrong, tap Report under it, or email us.
Using Ask
- Ask is for adults 18 and older.
- Leave out names and private details, yours or anyone else’s.
- Don’t use Ask to try to get harmful content or to get around its rules.
- We may pause Ask, and we may limit or block accounts that misuse it.
3. Your account
- Lamp creates an account for you automatically, without your name or email. Signing in with Apple or email lets you keep your data on other devices; keep that Apple Account or email account secure.
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings › Delete account. Our Privacy Policy explains what that deletes.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or harms Lamp or other people.
4. Using Lamp fairly
Please don’t use automated tools to access Lamp or its servers, copy Lamp’s study notes in bulk, try to get around limits, the free trial or the subscription (for example, with many accounts), interfere with Lamp’s servers, or use Lamp to break the law.
5. Bible texts and Lamp’s content
- Lamp’s Bible texts are the Berean Standard Bible, which is in the public domain, and the King James Version, which is in the public domain outside the United Kingdom. Lamp shows them unchanged from their published editions.
- Cross-references come from OpenBible.info, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
- Apart from the Bible texts and cross-references, Lamp’s content and software, including its study notes and verse selections, are for your personal, non-commercial use. You’re welcome to share the verse images you make in Lamp.
6. Changes
Lamp will change over time: we may add, change or remove features, or pause one to fix a problem. We may also update these terms. When we do, we’ll change the date at the top, and if a change is significant, we’ll let you know in Lamp or on this page before it takes effect. If you keep using Lamp after that, the new terms apply.
7. Your rights as a consumer
The Standard EULA’s disclaimers and limits of liability apply to Lamp to the extent the law allows. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer laws that can’t be excluded, such as the Australian Consumer Law and New Zealand’s Consumer Guarantees Act.
